Popis: We continuously experience conflicts between the drive to pursue goals and the need for sleep. Both are vital but mutually exclusive, and individuals need to carefully coordinate them to maximize their fitness. While circadian and homeostatic processes regulate the timing and duration of sleep, motivational drives can modulate and suppress sleep, and adaptive sleeplessness has been documented in several species. The capacity to forgo sleep for extended periods of time to engage in motivated behaviors is intriguing, and much has yet to be determined regarding the precise neuronal underpinnings underlying this process. Here, we will review the current understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the intersection between sleep and competing needs. We will also discuss the pathological association between dysregulation of motivational circuits and sleep/wake disturbances. We will focus on studies using traditional and nontraditional animal models, including studies in the lab and in the wild.
