The aqueous and ethanolic extract of 17 plant species belonging to six families were studied for their activity against rinderpest virus (RPV) using agar-overlay plaque-reduction antiviral assay system. The aqueous and ethanolic extracts from two species of Labiatae and three species from Umbel-liferae exhibited antiviral activity. The same effect was shown by three Cruciferae when extracted by ethanol but no effect appeared in the aqueous extract. No antiviral activity was detected from any other plant extracts studied. The toxicity of all plant extracts against Calf Kidney cells (CK) was determined. |
