Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a new solid freeform fabrication (SFF) process that creates parts directly from computer models [1]. 3DP functions by the deposition of powdered material in layers and the selective binding of the power by a modulated ‘ink-jet’ printing of a binder material. Following the sequential application of layers, the unbound powder is removed, resulting in a complex three-dimensional part, as illustrated in Fig. 2.1. 3DP is a highly flexible manufacturing process that allows for the fabrication of the component and assemblies of any shape in any material that can be obtained as a powder. The proper placement of binder droplets can be used to control the internal microstructure of the printed part and even create a component with local geometric and compositional control on a 100 μm scale. |
