This chapter focuses on the UK electricity sector and the GB capacity mechanism. The GB capacity mechanism has been in operation for some years, with the first auctions having taken place in December 2014, for delivery in 2018–2019. Although it suffered a one-year partial interruption following the annulment of the European Commission’s original state aid approval decision by the EU General Court in 2018, the mechanism is perceived as having been generally successful. Since its establishment, the mechanism has progressively been opened up for participation by interconnectors and demand response. However, some changes seem likely following a UK government consultation launched in July 2022. |
