Popis: Cauda equina syndrome is a rare condition (but likely underestimated in incidence) that occurs with lesions to the nerve roots distal to the conus medullaris. Lower extremity sensorimotor loss, bowel/bladder dysfunction, and, variably, radicular back pain are the most common presentations. Associated etiologies for non-compressive cauda equina syndrome following spinal anesthesia include local anesthetic neurotoxicity, neural inflammation, spinal stenosis, and surgical positioning, but most cases are idiopathic. Spinal stenosis and certain surgical positioning are associated with higher incidence of CSE. Clinical presentation and physical examination may be nonspecific; therefore, timely evaluation and emergent neurologic consultation are paramount. Rapid and readily available CT imaging may rule out a reversible cause, such as a decompressible mass lesion. Treatment options are limited.
