In this paper the development in the understanding of Leicestershire's archaeological past starts with the first comprehensive reviews by John Throsby (1791) and John Nichols (1795-1815). Changing interpretations of the available evidence, particularly by Thomas Potter (1842) and James Thompson (1849), are then traced through the first half of the nineteenth century up to the opening of the Town Museum in 1849. Special attention is paid to a key figure at the end of this period, James Hollings, whose contribution to the understanding of Leicestershire's archaeology has hitherto been largely overlooked.
