IR spectroscopy has been used to characterize samples prepared by decomposition of nickel carbonyl over a MoS2/γ-Al2O3 based catalyst. IR spectra of adsorbed CO indicates a much higher degree of promotion than for the conventional Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst. The samples also readily catalyse the in-situ transformation of piperidine into intermediate species yielding further pyridine. Chemical analysis leads to very low Ni content, indicating a delocalization of the electronic effects of the promoter over the whole MoS2 slab. Results are consistent with the promoted sites pictured as highly reduced sites. |
