This paper intends to demonstrate how artificial intelligence techniques can be applied to computer-aided product design and how they can be combined with traditional programming. Refering to a system for the design of high-voltage controlled rectifiers, we illustrate the problems of the formalisation of the task, system specification, knowledge acqusition and representation, interfacing, implementation and testing. Our findings are combined with related, more general results, to analyse the state-of-the-art and future development of CAD programs incorporating artificial intelligence techniques. |
