Piezoelectric effect on artificial phonon-plasmon polariton in lithium niobate(LiNbO[sub 3])

Popis: The coupling between optical phonons of piezoelectric metamaterial and the plasmons of semiconductor substrate results in the formation of a type of artificial surface polariton: phonon-plasmon polariton. The additional electric polarizations induced by the piezoelectric effect contribute to the effective dielectric function and to the elastic constant of the metamaterial film. In this work, we have calculated the effective elastic constant of the piezoelectric metamaterial. This additional contribution enhances both velocity and frequency of surface polaritons by 15%. The artificial surface phonon-plasmon polariton may offer opportunities in optical science such as acoustic excitation of surface plasmons and vice versa.
