Popis: | Thymic calcification produced by glucocorticosteroid in dihydrotachysterol-treated rats was localized to the cortical thymocytes. Thymocyte degeneration caused by the corticosteroid preceded and was more widespread than the calcification. Some calcific debris reached the draining lymph nodes, but calcification interfered with removal of necrotic thymocytes and retarded regeneration. The calcified masses persisted in the thymus for at least 10 weeks and elicited a foreign body reaction. Despite severe calcification, regeneration occurred and the thymus was not destroyed. |
