This paper describes a rare case of tuberculous stricture of the esophagus, which was diagnosed by clinical course, together with a review of the literature. An 80-year-old man was seen at the hospital because of anorexia and weight loss. On examination, stricture of the esophagus, left pleural effusion and high level of adenosine deaminase (ADA) in pleural effusion were revealed. Possible cause of tuberculosis was supposed. The patient was treated with streptomycin, isoniazid and rifampicin, with resolution of the left pleural effusion and stricture of the esophagus within 9 weeks. The patient was discharged from the hospital. Tuberculous involvement of the esophagus is a relatively rare clinical entity, with only 21 previously reported cases in the English-language literature. We also present the second case of esophageal tuberculosis in the Japanese literature. |
