Fifteen adult glaucous gulls, Larus hyperboreus, were captured in the vicinity of Ny-Alesund, Svalbard. The birds were kept captured and fed a diet of polar cod, Boreogadus saida, caught off the coast of Spitsbergen. After 40 days of captivity, the birds were killed. The presence of hepatic homologues to mammalian CYP1A and CYP2B proteins was demonstrated by Western blotting. High concentrations of PCBs were found in the liver (median ΣPCB 111 μg g−1 lipid), but hepatic EROD activity was low and significantly negatively correlated with concentrations of PCB-congener nos 28, 47, 66, 74, 105 and 187 in the liver. Plasma retinal did not correlate significantly with liver concentrations of PCBs, but a significant positive correlation was found between retinol concentration in plasma and hepatic EROD activity. |
