Popis: Glassy systems have long been known to strongly attenuate ultrasonic waves at low temperatures. This is due to the resonant absorption of phonons by the so-called Two-Level Systems any amorphous medium contains. Should the populations of those TLS be inverted, the medium becomes amplifying, stimulated emission then prevailing over absorption. We present in this paper an experiment of sound amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, and we describe the acoustic pumping process that achieves the population inversion in glasses.
