Popis: Study and manipulation of surface interactions has been a very important field of research because of its large number of applications in anti-icing, drop wise condensation, waterproofing, etc. Micro textured surfaces have been known to change the surface interactions which consequently affect condensation of droplets and their mobility. Here we demonstrate a simple yet effective method of manipulating non-magnetic droplets/beads under the influence of magnetic field using ferrofluid active surface. Ferrofluid layer was deposited on a glass substrate by vertical deposition method which helped to prevent surface pinning of the droplets and hence increased its mobility. Water droplets, air bubbles and solid beads were easily propelled using very low magnetic fields by this method. Moreover, magnetic field gradient perpendicular to the glass substrate exhibited variation in the contact angle of the ferrofluid coated water droplet. Such ferrofluid layers can be useful in controlling as well as manipulating the surface interactions of the drops without the need of micro textured surfaces
