A description is given of a compact, inexpensive and easily fabricated transmission detector of energetic heavy ions. The detector makes use of a crossed electric-magnetic field to guide electrons (ejected from a thin metallized film by a transiting heavy ion) into a series of cycloidal-like paths. With each impact, electron multiplication occurs resulting in a surge of current onto a collector plate. This detector should prove useful for timing the passage of heavy ions with a concurrent minimum energy loss (less than 0.5 MeV for fission fragments). The detection efficiency of passing 252 Cf fission fragments is 100% over a sensitive area of 1.3 cm 2 . Using two like detectors, an overall system timing resolution (fwhm) of 0.8 ns is possible at the present stage of development. |
