Any comparison of Britain and the United States reveals several important differences in their retailing landscapes. The purpose of the research reported here is to examine some of these differences and to speculate on some of the possible causes. Furthermore, the authors address recent locational trends in Britain which involve the decentralization of retailing activity and which represents a major change in the retailing scene. Finally, the paper concludes by considering whether as a result of this decentralization British cities will follow the scenario of the decline of retailing in the central business district (CBD) in the United States. These topics as presented in this paper are largely descriptive. Nonetheless, the research provides further insights and additional knowledge with respect to international retailing by examining spatial aspects of British retailing in comparison with those in the U.S. |
