Popis: Commercial CR-39 monomers were distilled to a high degree of purity for the preparation of consistent polymers using a reliable initiator. The extent of polymerization and the degree of crosslinking were characterized by various techniques. New CR-39 polymers made from purified CR-39 monomers have a higher crosslinking density and uniformity compared to commercial CR-39 polymers. Commercial and new CR-39 polymers were irradiated with high energy neutrons of various energies. The neutron tracks were developed by chemical and electrochemical etching processes followed by examination with an automatic image analyzer coupled with an interference microscope. A linear correlation of track density versus dosage was obtained in the 0–5 rem range. A preliminary study on a copolymer of CR-39 and maleic anhydride showed much higher etching velocity compared to CR-39 homopolymers, which may reduce track development time drastically.
