Data on batch and continuous culture studies for the nitrification and denitrification of API separator effluents from a Kuwaiti refinery are described. These studies showed that the physico-chemically pretreated refinery wastewater can be effectively nitrified and denitrified by bacteria. The batch culture studies indicated that methanol and municipal wastewater could serve as electron donors for denitrification. The former was more efficient than the latter at equivalent total organic carbon values. Continuous culture studies indicated that after an efficient pretreatment to remove the inhibitory pollutants, refinery wastewaters can be nitrified and denitrified without recourse to powdered activated carbon. |
