Retention of Lead Arsenate on Apple Surfaces When Used with Certain Fungicides1

Popis: | The effects on deposition and retention of arsenic on apple surfaces were studied through 3 seasons when lead arsenate was used alone and in combination with captan, dodine (Cyprex®), glyodin, and Bordeaux mixture. In the first 2 seasons lead arsenate was used in only 1 application when the apples were about 1 in. in diameter. Analyses of the fruit for arsenic were made by the bromate method immediately after application and after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 days of exposure. Three applications of the fungicides with lead arsenate were made beginning at the same time as previously. Analyses for arsenic were made before and after each application and about 64 days after the first application. In single application tests of weathering there were quantitative differences between lead arsenate alone and lead arsenate with Bordeaux, with dodine or with captan, although the rates of weathering are similar. There was a rapid initial sloughing off for about 4 days, and then a much slower weathering for 60 days. Glyodin appears quite different, with a lower deposit, little sloughing off, and more rapid weathering. After 3 applications of the test mixtures, the arsenic residues were: Bordeaux 1.05 mg, dodine 0.88 mg, captan 0.87 mg, glyodin 0.71 mg, and lead arsenate alone 0.67 mg. Based on these results, initial tests are being made to control apple maggot using arsenicals with Bordeaux mixture in area control. |
