We report the observation of line emission at 13.2 nm from the kl 1S0 -4p 'P1 laser transition ofNi-like Cd in a plasmacolumn created by a high-power capillary discharge. Time-resolved soft x-ray pinhole images of the plasma columnshow that the plasma column maintains good symmetry up to the time of maximum compression. The observeddynamics of the plasma column is compared with model simulations. These results advance the possibility of observinglaser amplification in Ni-like Cd at 13.2 urn and in other short-wavelength Nickel-like ion transitions in a discharge- created plasma. Keywords: x-ray lasers, capillary discharges 1. INTRODUCTION There is significant interest in the possibility of extending capillary discharge lasers to shorter wavelengths. Largeamplification in capillary discharge-pumped ultrashort wavelength lasers has been achieved in Ne-like Ar, Ne-like S andNe-like Cl at wavelengths ranging from 46.9 nm to 60.8 nm [1-3]. The tabletop Ne-like Ar laser operating at 46.9 urnhas produced the highest average power reported to date for a soft x-ray laser, 3.5 mW [4], and it has been successfullyutilized in several applications [5]. |
