We have recently characterized a large array of sixteen different sterols in the members of the family Cucurbitaceae1–4. These include the dominant Δ7-sterols, some “main line” Δ5-sterols, and sterols characteristic of organisms (algae and fungi) much lower on the evolutionary scale. This represents, by far, the most complex sterol profile found in a higher plant, and raises important questions regarding the sterol biosynthetic pathway in Cucurbitaceae. In the present investigation, we have examined the incorporation of [2-14C]mevalonic acid (MVA) into various sterol fractions in seedlings of Cucurbita maxima. |
