The theory of amal is one of the main notions of Arabic grammar. The form amal, which is the verbal noun of the verb amila, literally means "effect," and as a technical grammatical term it designates "the effect of the amil on the case endings of the noun and the mood endings of the imperfect verb." The grammarians came to the conclusion that there are three cases in old Arabic: aired, ai-nasb and ai-garr. The old grammarians were forced to reject this view since in Old Arabic nouns of identical syntactical function take different case endings in different syntactical constructions. In the older grammarians' yiew, the nominative zaydun in duriba zaydun is an object, as the accusative zaydan in daraba amrun zaydan is an object. The grammarians say that the mubtada takes the nominative because of the effect of al-ibtida'. |
