Popis: Heart failure (HF) is one of the most prevalent diseases of the elderly patient. Heart failure is defined as a clinical condition arising from impaired ventricular relaxation or systolic ejection of the cardiac ventricles. The underlying pathophysiology varies considerably, and approximately 50% of the patients suffer from HF with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. Mortality in the perioperative period is increased in patients with HF and therefore needs careful planning and management. The role of adequate preoperative evaluation and preparation of patients with HF is vital to overall a patient’s survival. It becomes clear that the New York Heart Association classification and parameters like brain natriuretic peptide play a crucial role in risk stratification and prediction of outcome.
