We have shown that a β2-m-like molecule may exist on earthworm leukocyte membranes, but this molecule is not expressed by all leukocytes. Although our experiments dealing with absorption using Lumbricus cells are encouraging, we do acknowledge that the monoclonal antibody may recognize only a discrete epitope (Julliard et al., 1980) of a protein present on both vertebrate and invertebrate cell membranes and that the two may not be necessarily related. Thus, such precise recognition raises the question of how significant is the homology detected by monoclonal antibodies. |
