Understanding of the protein folding process has become a major focus of current biophysical research. One of the most important motifs for protein folds is the α-helix which can be difficult to model due to its relative instability in aqueous solution. Studies on oligopeptides of specific length and composition are very useful for defining the energetics and mechanisms of helix formation in water. A subfield of folding studies has developed following the demonstration by Baldwin and coworkers [1] that a class of Ala rich peptides are highly helical in water at low temperatures provided they have some interspersed Lys resides to maintain solubility. |
