Popis: | The widespread belief that domestic animals—and cattle in particular—are a major cause of forest and land degradation in Central America is analyzed in a systems context emphasizing economic and demographic considerations. It is concluded that large human population increases rather than animals per se , or preferences for livestock products, are responsible for the widespread destruction. Minimal increases in Central America's rural population coupled with very large projected increases in urban population imply that development strategies should be reevaluated with the focus of increasing livestock raising efficiency and productivity. |
