2,4-Dimethylpentene-2 was prepared in two ways: I. by dehydration of 2,4-dimethylpentanol-2 according to Chavanne and de Graef; II. by thermal decomposition of the acetate of 2,4-dimethylpentanol-3 according to van Pelt and Wibaut. The substance prepared by method I, whose constants agreed with those given by de Graef, was found to be contaminated with small amounts of 2,4-dimethylpentene-1, as was deduced from the formation of a small amount of formaldehyde upon oxidation with ozone. In the ozonization of the product of method II no formaldehyde was formed. |
