The purpose of this chapter is to describe the prevalence of depression in children and adolescents, the symptoms of the disorder, and how they differ from those manifested in depressed adults. A rational emotive behavioral perspective regarding the etiology and assessment of depression, as well as developmental considerations, is presented. Research on rational emotive and cognitive behavioral therapy with depressed children and adolescents is described. Techniques that are useful in assessing the intensity, severity, and frequency of the depression are included. Best practice guidelines for the treatment of this disorder will be addressed, with emphasis on developmentally appropriate interventions. The chapter concludes with a case study illustrating the assessment and intervention process with a depressed adolescent. |
