Complications following cardiac surgery may be related to the patient’s baseline state and comorbidities, the index procedure and postoperative sequelae, institutional/environmental factors and exposures, or (more likely) a combination of these factors. Previous chapters have dealt with pre- and perioperative considerations, acute complications following cardiac surgery, and general considerations of routine surgical ward care. This chapter will address common complications seen in the sub-acute period on the ward following cardiac surgery, from wound healing issues to organ-specific complications, and aims to develop an approach to the prevention and management of such complications. |
