In March 2020, Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out a programme of archaeological evaluation on land at Hunters Moon, Colchester Road, Wix, Essex, CO11 2RS (NGR TM 15992 28414; Figs. 1 and 2). The evaluation was carried out to provide for the initial requirements of a planning condition attached to planning approval for the demolition of the existing dwelling and the construction of ten dwellings with detached garages (Tendring Council Planning Approval Ref. 19/00270/FUL). It was required by the LPA based on the advice of the Historic Environment Advisor of Essex County Council (ECC HEA). The site lies to the south of the Wix bypass and to the northwest of the village. The Essex Historic Environments Record (EHER) notes that the site lies within an area of archaeological potential, with multi-period find spots from the surrounding areas, and cropmarks of archaeological features immediately adjacent to the site. Possible evidence of Saxon activity is known from around the medieval moated Park Hall, in addition to medieval activity. The presence of made ground layers suggests that the ground has been truncated. A modern pit was revealed. |
