The contact circuits introduced in Chapter 4 provide examples of binary switching circuits where the basic building element is the contact relay. In general, consideration will be given to a circuit having n binary inputs and m binary outputs and known as a binary switching circuit1. It will be seen that, generally, such a circuit is produced with the aid of one or more relatively simple basic functional elements, each used in one or more examples, to be known as switching elements.
