Popis: 1. As a result of a comparison of the polarization curves and curves of the dependence of the differential capacitance of a platinum electrode on the potential, the hypothesis has been advanced that the drop in the double layer capacitance observed at a potential of + 1.3 V and corresponding to a change in the coefficient b of the Tafel equation is related to adsorption of acetate anions on the surface of the platinum anode. 2. The change in the capacitance of the platinum electrode at potentials of 1.95–2.0 V and the plateau on the polarization curve corresponding to these potentials are due to coverage of the surface of the platinum anode by a chemosorbed compound in the form of the radical CH3COO. 3. The increase in the capacitance of the platinum electrode at potentials higher than 2.1 V. corresponding to the appearance of a new linear portion on the polarization curve, may be related to liberation of the anode surface from the chemosorbed compounds that passivate it, as a result of the occurrence of the Kolbe electrosynthesis according to the mechanism of electrochemical desorption.
