Popis: This report outlines the results of archaeological testing conducted by SWCA Inc., related to construction of the Red Mountain Freeway (Loop 202) in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. The project area consists of two parcels located within the proposed Red Mountain Freeway corridor. As part of the environmental study conducted for this project, several cultural resource surveys were undertaken to identify the presence and location of archaeological sites within the project area. The results of these studies are documented in reports prepared by Gasser (1987) and Mitchell (1988). Although an archaeological survey of these parcels did not record a site (Mitchell 1988:13), Motsinger and Mitchell (1995) recommended testing based on the presence of an unnamed canal recorded by Midvale (1968) and the potential for additional buried features. At the request of the Arizona Department of Transportation and under contract to Stanley Consultants, SWCA prepared a testing plan for these parcels (Motsinger and Mitchell 1995). When the plan was implemented in November of 1995, seven features were found only within the Northeast Parcel; these features combined were assigned the site number AZ U:9:149 (ASM). Cultural resources were not identified within the Southwest Parcel. The sampling strategy, field methods, and a description of the site and features identified in testing are provided below. The site discovered during testing is considered eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), under Criterion D, so additional data recovery is recommended. A data-recovery work plan is presented here that outlines a research design and specific methods to be used during data recovery at AZ U:9:149 (ASM).
