We investigated if self-evaluation processes can be influenced by evaluative conditioning. We paired self-relevant and non-self-relevant words with stimuli that hold either a positive or a negative valence in a evaluative conditioning procedure. Test subjects were divided into two groups: in a positive group self-relevant words were paired more frequently with positive adjectives while in the negative group self-relevant words were paired more frequently with negative adjectives. We examined the effect of this conditioning on the current affect of the subjects as well as on the directly and indirectly assessed self-worth. |
