Popis: | An explanation is proposed to account for the transition from “middle” to “neat” phase in soap-alcohol-water systems as the alcohol content increases. The method used is to calculate differences in the free energies of the two structures as a function of alcohol content at constant water content. The free energies considered are the electrostatic free energies of charging and the interfacial free energies between the micellar units and the aqueous continuum. There is reasonable success in predicting the phase boundaries in these ternary systems, and the importance of electrical charges in stabilizing a particular structure is highlighted. |
