Publisher Summary This chapter discusses aspects of the general behavior of local neuronal networks (LNNs) considered as dynamic systems. It focuses on the CA1 area of the rat hippocampus. The main structural and physiological properties of the neuronal elements and the synaptic circuits of the CA1 area are also discussed. The dynamics of the LNNs is considered as systems, i.e. their modes of activity under different conditions. The basic theoretical concepts of non-linear dynamics are treated to introduce notions such as attractors, dimensions, bifurcations and chaos. The analogies between dynamic non-linear systems and LNNs are examined, considering the changes in correlation dimension under different conditions. Finally, the chapter considers how disturbances of the control parameters—in particular, the balance between excitatory and inhibitory processes (E /I balance) can give rise to bifurcations and pathological behavior such as in epilepsy. |
