Popis: | Summary Previous work has shown that ablation of the neurosecretory cells in female Rhodnius results in a failure of the proteinaceous secretion to appear in the lumen of the gland and death of the spermatozoa; this is not due to a failure in protein synthesis in the gland. In the present paper electron microscopy reveals that in females lacking their neurosecretory cells, the secretion accumulates in a cup-shaped depression outside the apical end of the secretory cell, but beneath the intima which lines the lumen. Direct observation of the movements of the spermathecal gland in situ shows that the muscular activity increases sharply after feeding in mated or virgin females and in females deprived of their neurosecretory cells immediately after feeding. In unoperated mated females the muscular activity decreases only slightly during the second day after feeding, but rises again to a higher peak on the eighth day after feeding. By contrast, the muscular activity of spermathecae in virgin females or females... |
