Support prices of burley tobacco were altered in 1989 to promote the better grades and discourage the production of the poorer grades. A research method was developed to assess the potential monetary benefits of environmental modification during burley tobacco curing. The annual increased crop value from improved curing associated with maximum environmental modification potential, with an environmental modification system that improves 75% of the undesirable colors, was $2,946/ha ($1,187/ac) compared to the estimated cost of the system of $1,250 to $1,500/ha ($500 to $600/ac). An economic incentive therefore exists for environmental modification for the producer whose crop often sells for the support price because of poor curing. |
