Modified microstructure in eutectic Au-Co alloys by use of a magnetic field during directional solidification

Popis: Directional solidification of Au-Co alloys in the compositional range between 23.5 and 31 at% Co (27% being the eutectic composition) has yielded a fibrous Co-phase. The dependence of inter-fiber spacing on growth velocity and the stability range of planar growth has been established. Application of a magnetic field parallel to the growth direction resulted in a coarsening of the Co-phase. Of particular interest from the standpoint of composite structure growth is the observation of zones with elongated single arm dendrites.
