With the recent development of new Internet technologies and the rapid increase of computer processing speed, group-based online engineering education and training in real-time for geometrically distributed learners is possible. Previous research on real-time synchronous collaborative learning over the Internet is reviewed. An online group-based cantilever beam learning environment is developed and presented as an example. This system employs low lag audio and interactive three-dimensional models to illustrate abstract concepts in real-time. The learners are capable of manipulating three-dimensional models, changing the view point and applying forces in various locations. All physically separated users are able to view the same analytical results of the objects through the browser in real-time from remote sites. This research provides a framework, built with Macromedia Flash Communication Server and Director, for constructing an online three-dimensional synchronous group study environment. |
