The problem of how the concentration of the chain transfer agent, the catalyst and the reaction time influence the chlorine content in oligomers prepared by cationic copolymerization of THF with propylene oxide, in presence of methacrylic anhydride has been investigated with SbCl5 as the catalyst. It is shown that incorporation of chlorine into oligomers taken place as a result of the termination of macrochains growing on active centres formed without participation of the chain transfer agent, since the chlorine content in the reaction products increases with increasing catalyst concentration, and depends neither on the concentration of the chain transfer agent nor on the time of the reaction. The number average functionality of the products in respect to chlorine is determined by the molar ratio of methacrylic anhydride and SbCl5. |
