The dynamics of adult life can be as forceful and full of transitory states as is life before 20. Recently, more and more researchers have turned their attention to the problems of development and aging in later periods of life. Two important documents for those working with older adults are the National Institute on Aging's Special Report on Aging 1990 and Progress Report on Alzheimer's Disease. There may be less active evaluation and treatment of older adults who can benefit from care. Health monitoring, preventive care, and reassurance when minor deficits of memory or diminished energy become evident call for families and sometimes even professionals who are empathic, knowledgeable, and desirous of helping without diminishing the esteem of the older adult. |
