Popis: | High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been applied to the separation and determination of o-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,4-dichlorophenol, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol in water samples after prior derivatization with 4-aminoantipyrine. These substances are the phenolic decomposition products of the phenoxy-alkanoic acid herbicides: 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 2,4-dichlorophenoxybutyric acid (2,4-DB), and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T). An RP-C18 column was used, with gradient elution starting at 50/50 and changing to 70/30 methanol/water (v/v) after 24 min. Detection was carried out at 470 nm where the 4-aminoantipyrilquinonimine derivatives show maximum absorbance. The method was linear over a concentration range of 5–10,000 ppb phenol in the original water sample. By using an enrichment step a detection limit of 2 ppb phenol could be approached. The method was used to study the degree of degradation of the phenoxy acids to phenols under different conditions of temperature, pH, and UV irradiation. |
