In October 2006, after five years of work, a Translation Committee submitted a new Finnish translation of the Apocrypha or Deuteroca-nonical Books of the Old Testament to the Church Assembly of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church for approval. Because of the ecumenical character of the Committee, a maximalist approach was followed concerning the choice of books to be translated. As a result, all of the texts which were considered canonical by one of the Churches participating in the project were included in the collection. This article focuses on First Esdras this project marked the very first translation of First Esdras into Finnish. It discusses the problems that each translator faces. After a long and multifaceted scholarly speculation on riddles without a definitive solution, it can be concluded that very few readers of our translations will note and appreciate these attainments of the translators - irrespective of the level of their quality.
