Spectroscopic study of complex formation between 1-vinylimidazole and acrylic acid

Popis: Complex formation during copolymerization of 1-vinylimidazole with acrylic acid and its dependence on dielectric permitivity of the medium and on temperature was studied by IR spectroscopy. It could be shown that complex formation between these monomers precedes copolymerization in CCl4 solutions. In IR spectra of the copolymers, the appearance of carboxylate ion stretching vibrations, of a high-frequency shift of skeletal vibration bands of the imidazole ring, as well as the appreciable bathochromic shift of the π→π∗-transition in UV spectra of the copolymers as compared to those of 1-ethylimidazole indicate the occurrence in the copolymers of internal complexes differing from the hydrogen-bonded complexes in the monomer mixture.
