Summary The one-electron reduction of organomercury salts, RHgX, where R=Alk or Ar, has been studied by the galvanostatic method. In all cases studied, the electron-transfer step is reversible, and “organic calomels”, RHgHgR, are identified as metastable products of transformation of the primary electrolysis product. Organic calomels then transfer to R2Hg. It has been shown that Ar2Hg2 and AlkHgHgAr are unable to dissociate to organomercury radicals, RHg. The assumption is that organic calomels are formed as a result of interaction between RHg and RHgX in this process. In aromatic series the dimerization of RHg radical species may be detected at high current densities. |
