Popis: The most striking and possibly the most significant hormonal change associated with the menopause is the cessation of estrogen secretion by the ovaries. The resultant sharp decrease in circulating estrogens has been presumed to be causally related to many of the physical and behavioral symptoms which are frequently associated with the climacteric. It is axiomatic that to comprehend the deficits which result from the decrease in circulating estrogens it is necessary to understand the nature of the action of the female sex hormone on its various target sites. The purpose of this contribution is to describe studies which have been directed to the concept that modulation of the activity of estradiol both in quantitative and qualitative terms is achieved by its metabolism either peripherally or in the target tissues.
