Popis: Sara Munoz-Muriana examines the relationship between the sacred and the city in the Spanish late nineteenth century through the urban presence of Francisco Torquemada, in the Galdosian series in which he is nominally the protagonist. Midway between the old metaphysics of usury and the world of modern finance, Torquemada is a hybrid subject in a state of permanent dislocation. Looking at the character’s relationship with streets, both as sources of income by which Torquemada turns the urban space and his circulation in it into economic wealth, and as sacred spaces in which to reconnect with God through acts of charity, this chapter also analyzes the fundamental importance of itinerancy to defy old forms of authority and make the whole city a sacred site.
