In recent years, it has been recognized by many researchers (e.g., Lehman 1990) that the study of oversimplified models of both the skeletal and the muscular subsystem may produce totally unrealistic and even fundamentally erroneous results (see also Chapter 7). This has prompted some investigators to extend and refine musculoskeletal models toward more complex and biologically realistic ones. A discussion of the problems associated with the development of controllable large-scale musculoskeletal models, the main features of the latter, and some computer simulation results will be the main topic of the present perspective. It will be organized as follows: Subsection 1.1 gives a general definition and brief description of types of models, followed by a discussion of model complexity in Subsection 1.2. |
