Popis: In the context of natural disasters like the Tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the topic of disaster management has become a key concern both from a local and an international level. The frequency of occurrence of natural disasters at present has increased due to changes in the global and regional climate. Decision making in disaster management needs rapid decisions before, during and after the disaster. Any disaster management system requires forecasting natural disasters, which is very important in mitigating loss of damages to human, animals, and others. In order to manage disasters properly, it requires analyzing a massive amount of data including big data. It seems that human intelligence itself is not capable of successfully coping with such analysis. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more important. Contemporary Sri Lanka is also facing frequent disaster experiences. Application of AI in disaster management has already been recognized by the government of Sri Lanka. With the use of secondary data, the article describes few cases where Artificial Intelligence has been effectively utilized in disaster management and highlights the importance of Artificial Intelligence. Also, opportunities and problems in the application of Artificial Intelligence in disaster management in Sri Lanka are discussed.
